History
Stockdale’s history dates to the 1830s, with a formal town site platted in 1872 and a post office established in 1871. Named for Fletcher S. Stockdale, Texas lieutenant governor during the final days of the Confederacy, the town flourished with the arrival of the San Antonio and Gulf Railroad in 1898. Cotton, watermelons, and peanuts became the backbone of its agricultural economy—a heritage still celebrated today through the Watermelon Jubilee, now in its 82nd year.
